Cosmogramma

Flying Lotus. Paddy turned me onto this when we visited Warp last week. At first I found it really scary (!) but as Stephen said - after you have listened to it a few times it becomes a nice inviting blanket. Weird huh? And good.

Young Dreams

Young Dreams at Madam JoJos (last Tuesday) and The Lexington. I am hoping to mix an LP for this Norwegian band - so it was very inspirational to see and hear them perform live. An extra dimension to the whole experience. A realisation that it is a focused and energetic 7 piece. That energy is something I would love to bring over in the mixing. Madame JoJo was a good gig but The Lexington gig was really outstanding.

Jackie Mason

Mr Mason was indeed very funny, I enjoyed it immensely (even though I wasn’t so sure about it before I went) At Wyndhams.

ReamDe

Neal Stephenson’s latest is a seductive whirlwind of a thriller (?), and I am somehow addicted as I was to the other books of his that I read. Half way through right now, so don’t yet know if it is a healthy addiction…..

As I twittered: Happy to say I've finished Reamde - not sure it was worth the time invested. Life is short.

A Dangerous Method

This movie, David Cronenberg’s latest tells an interesting story and makes me want to read the book which is sadly not yet available in Kindle format. I am interested in psychoanalysis and the founding fathers too, so perhaps this is not a movie for everyone. Nevertheless fine performances, ridiculously crisp photography and exquisite attention to detail in the sets and locations made for a thoroughly compelling 99 minutes at the movies. (seemed enjoyably longer) And the spanking.

David Hockney - A Bigger Picture

This exhibition at the Royal Academy is incredibly crowded, but still well worth catching. The Scale! And Size! The Colours! The Amount of Pictures!
It is all very full on, but some wonderful stuff. I particularly loved the photo-collages from the 80s and his Charcoal Drawings from Yorkshire.
Wow - this guy is REALLY PROLIFIC. Perhaps he needs an editor? OK he filled the galleries, but somehow overwhelming, and perhaps the exhibition suffers because of that.
And way too many people

Martha Marcy May Marlene

This film has no real plot, not much happens, here is very little music and none of the characters are sympathetic. Rather slow moving. It really stands out because of this and we enjoyed it.

Electronics Without Tears

F C Judd. Inspirational. He built very early synths (poss. before Moog and Buchla)

Patience (After Sebald)

The Caretaker. Very evocative and mesmerising. Lots of piano from Schubert’s WinterReise. Lovely

Death Proof

Came highly recommended but didn’t enjoy it as much as I had hoped. Still - it was a crazy ride.

Barry Adamson

QEH. I loved this show. For the first couple of numbers I was thinking - What is he doing? And then I became swept up in Barry’s world. Individual and Original. Genius. And a big band - lots of strings and a 4 piece Brass section. Great

The Fear Index

By Robert Harris. Really enjoyed the book initially but as the picture became clearer I felt it was weak and derivative.

I loved this novel and have been recommending it to anyone who will listen to me. I know it is super popular and deservedly so. Intelligent, touching and thought provoking
